The Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis, the Ruby Rose and Golden Cross, is the Golden Dawn's own published name for its Second Order, a title documented in Israel Regardie's editions of the order's papers alongside the grade sequence, Adeptus Minor, Adeptus Major and Adeptus Exemptus, that structure it. Adeptus Exemptus's own place in that sequence is part of the same publicly available material.
General histories of the order describe the Second Order's rose and cross symbolism as a deliberate shift away from the First Order's elemental framework, a change in emblematic register that published scholarship treats as one of the clearest visual markers separating the order's outer and inner teaching.
Because Regardie's published editions did not appear until decades after the order's founding and its later schisms, general accounts of Adeptus Exemptus and the Second Order grades around it are explicit that everything publicly known today rests on material released well after the events it describes, rather than on contemporaneous nineteenth century publication.
That publication gap is itself a documented fact in the historical scholarship on the order: general accounts note that members of the original Golden Dawn kept this material internal for decades, and that Adeptus Exemptus's own public profile today is largely a twentieth century phenomenon built on Regardie's editions rather than on anything the founding generation itself released.
