Sheldon Jackson's Reindeer and the Denominational Map He Drew

The informal agreement that divided nineteenth century Alaska among competing Protestant missions had a specific architect. Sheldon Jackson, a Presbyterian missionary appointed the federal government's General Agent for Education in Alaska in 1885, organized denominations into a comity system assigning different regions to different churches rather than letting them compete in the same villages, Presbyterians concentrated in the southeast around Sitka, Episcopalians along the Yukon, Methodists in the Aleutians, so that a Native community would encounter one mission rather than several rival ones. Jackson paired that map with an economic project: alarmed that overhunting had depleted the marine mammals coastal Native communities depended on, he began importing domesticated reindeer from Siberia in 1892, training Native herders and building schools around the herds, a program he ran simultaneously with his missionary and educational authority.

The reindeer program eventually passed into government and cooperative hands, but the denominational map Jackson drew shaped which church a Native Alaskan family encountered for generations, layered atop the older Russian Orthodox presence that had arrived a century earlier. Today Evangelical Protestant identification leads at twenty six percent of adults, per Pew's 2023-24 measurement, just ahead of Nothing in Particular at twenty one percent, in a state whose religious map was drawn administratively as much as it grew organically.
