The Perennial Philosophy and Its Search for One Mysticism

Aldous Huxley published The Perennial Philosophy in 1945 as an anthology and commentary rather than an argument built from his own premises: he assembled passages from Christian mystics, the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads, Sufi poets, and Taoist and Zen sources, and arranged them under recurring themes, the nature of the self, the ground of being, the practice of contemplation, to argue that beneath their different vocabularies the world's mystical traditions converge on the same reported reality. The term itself he borrowed from Gottfried Leibniz's philosophia perennis, but the comparative method, reading a Meister Eckhart passage beside a verse of the Chandogya Upanishad as evidence of one underlying insight, was Huxley's own, developed at a moment when he had moved from the satirical social novels of his twenties toward Vedanta, in part through his friendship with Gerald Heard and the Vedanta Society of Southern California. The book found an eager readership among spiritual seekers looking for common ground across traditions and a cooler one among historians of religion and mystics themselves, who argued that Huxley's method flattened real doctrinal differences, ancestral sin is not Zen emptiness is not Vedantic nondualism, into a single experience they do not in fact describe identically. The book remains the most widely read single statement of the position this atlas records as a claim traditions themselves make in sharply different ways, not as this atlas's own conclusion about them.
