From the Anxious Bench to the Stadium Crusade
The altar call's origin is usually traced to Charles Grandison Finney, an American revivalist preacher of the 1820s and 1830s who introduced what he called the anxious bench, a seat placed at the front of a revival meeting to which those under spiritual conviction were invited to come forward publicly during the sermon, making a visible, physically located decision the centrepiece of the conversion experience in a way earlier American Protestant preaching had not done, and Finney defended the innovation explicitly as a deliberate new means suited to producing decision rather than as a practice with any deeper historical pedigree.
The technique reached its largest scale in the twentieth century through Billy Graham's stadium crusades, where invitations to come forward at the close of a sermon drew tens of thousands of respondents across decades of televised and in-person events worldwide, choreographed with music, sustained appeal and trained counsellors positioned to meet each person who came forward, turning Finney's single wooden bench into a globally recognisable set piece of evangelical mass evangelism. The practice has drawn sustained internal criticism as well as external observation, with some evangelical theologians and pastors arguing that the emotional pressure, repeated appeal and social dynamics of a public walk to the front can produce a decision driven by the moment's atmosphere rather than genuine conviction, a concern serious enough that some churches have deliberately moved away from the practice toward quieter, less public forms of response, even as it remains a defining and instantly recognisable feature of the wider revivalist tradition Finney began.
