Alum is identified as potassium aluminium sulfate dodecahydrate, KAl(SO4)2.12H2O, a double salt combining potassium and aluminium sulfates in one crystal, an identification well established and essentially uncontested since the compound remains in commercial production and use today under the same name. Alum's central chemical significance in the history of chemistry is that its aluminium content was, for a very long time, treated simply as part of alum's own identity rather than as evidence of a distinct new metal waiting to be isolated; aluminium itself was not isolated as a separate metallic element until the early nineteenth century, by Hans Christian Orsted and shortly after by Friedrich Wohler, meaning that alum was manufactured, traded and used with real chemical sophistication for well over a thousand years before anyone extracted the metal that gives the salt its modern name, a clear parallel to zinc's similarly delayed isolation from calamine. The Tolfa alum discovery's treatment as a matter of papal finance is itself a useful reminder that a chemically ordinary salt could carry real geopolitical weight whenever a widely needed craft material depended on a small number of controllable sources.
