Ambubachi Mela occupies a genuinely unusual position within the wider landscape of Hindu practice around menstruation, since the dominant pattern across most Hindu communities and temples treats menstruation as a state requiring exclusion from worship and from sacred space, the same underlying logic that produced the Sabarimala temple's historical exclusion of women of menstruating age and the Nepali practice of chhaupadi, in which menstruating women are secluded from the household. Ambubachi inverts that logic entirely by making the goddess's menstruation itself the object of celebration and the reason very large numbers of pilgrims, including significant numbers of ascetics and tantric practitioners drawn specifically by the festival's tantric associations, travel to the site.

Scholars of Hindu religious practice regularly cite Ambubachi Mela as the clearest counter-example available whenever a general claim is made that Hindu tradition uniformly treats menstruation as polluting, since here the same biological event is instead treated as the single most sacred moment of the temple's annual calendar. The festival's strong pull on tantric and ascetic practitioners specifically, drawn by Kamakhya's standing as a major centre of tantric practice within Hindu tradition, adds a further layer of visible contrast with temples that restrict access around menstruation, since some of the same ascetic orders most associated with strict ritual purity elsewhere converge on Kamakhya precisely because of, rather than despite, the festival's premise.
