Libra 27: The Rhinoceros

Charubel's image for this degree is bluntly physical: a rhinoceros. In the drawing rooms of Libra the animal arrives like a fact nobody invited, and that is its function. The rhinoceros is mass, armour and a single forward-pointing weapon; its sight is famously poor and its charge famously committed, a creature that perceives dimly and acts overwhelmingly, almost impossible to deflect once moving. Nothing about it negotiates.

Read against the twenty seventh degree of Libra the image confronts the sign with everything its methods do not cover, the force that cannot be charmed, reasoned with or rebalanced, the brute circumstance, the intransigent party, the illness, the institution, the sheer event that comes on regardless. Every diplomat eventually meets a rhinoceros, and the degree's realism is its kindness, because strategies exist and none of them are persuasion: one gets out of the line of the charge, one uses ground the animal cannot take, one waits, since charges exhaust. There is also an inward reading, the rhinoceros as one's own armoured obstinacy, the hide grown thick, the tendency when finally provoked to go straight through the furniture, which surprises exactly those who thought the balance would hold forever. Thick skin, the animal reminds us, is a defence that ends by feeling nothing. On a natal Mars or Saturn this degree tends to mark encounters with the immovable, outside or inside, and its counsel is savanna practicality: respect mass, keep your footing and your distance, and never stake the whole garden on the assumption that everything can be talked to.
