Aquarius 2: The Hollow Trunk

Charubel's image for this degree is a tree past its use: the trunk of a large tree covered with moss, and hollow. The tree is large, so it once commanded real ground, and it is hollow, so whatever structural core once ran through the centre of it is gone, leaving only the outer shell standing on habit and bark. The moss is the detail that dates it, since moss needs years of undisturbed stillness to establish a green coat, and its presence says this trunk has stood exactly as it is, unattended, for a long time.

Read at the second degree of Aquarius the picture is a caution placed early in a sign famous for outgrowing its own structures, since the very impulse that lets Aquarius abandon what no longer serves can also leave a hollow institution standing long after its living centre is gone, kept upright by nothing but the outer form and nobody's attention. A hollow trunk is not without use, since birds nest in such cavities and insects a whole ecology inside them, and the degree allows for a second reading in which the emptied structure becomes a home for something entirely different from what it originally was built to carry. The shadow is reverence for the shell itself, moss admired as though it were health rather than neglect.

On a natal Saturn or Moon this degree tends to mark inherited structures, families, offices or beliefs that have gone hollow at the centre, and its counsel is an arborist's: open the trunk before praising its girth, and decide honestly whether it should be felled, repurposed, or simply admired for what still nests inside it.
