Reclaiming Bodh Gaya: Dharmapala's Campaign

By the time Anagarika Dharmapala reached Bodh Gaya on pilgrimage in 1891, active Buddhist presence at the site of the Buddha's own awakening had shrunk to almost nothing, and the Mahabodhi Temple itself stood under the management of a Hindu religious authority that did not permit Buddhist worship there in any organized way. Dharmapala's response was institutional rather than simply devotional: he founded the Maha Bodhi Society that same year specifically to reverse that arrangement, and pursued the goal on two fronts at once, a formal lawsuit against the site's Brahmin custodians seeking Buddhist control, and an international publicity and fundraising campaign carried through the society's own journal, The Maha Bodhi, aimed at a Buddhist world well beyond India's own small and largely dormant Buddhist population. Neither front produced the outright victory he sought in his own lifetime, the temple's management question remained legally and politically contested for decades after his 1933 death, but the campaign itself did what may have mattered more in the long run: it re-established Bodh Gaya as a living site of Buddhist pilgrimage and international attention rather than a monument administered by a tradition not its own, and it made the Maha Bodhi Society, and Dharmapala's broader case that Buddhism's birthplace deserved an active Buddhist presence, part of how the modern Buddhist world understood its own geography from that point forward.
