Andromeda's first article credits Edwin Hubble with proving the Andromeda Galaxy lies far outside the Milky Way in the 1920s. The object he measured had already been written down, without any instrument at all, nearly a thousand years earlier.
The Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi described it in 964 CE in his Book of Fixed Stars, calling it a little cloud near the mouth of the constellation's figure, the same patch of sky later resolved by telescopes into a galaxy of hundreds of billions of stars. Al-Sufi's catalogue reworked Ptolemy's Almagest for an Arabic audience, correcting star positions and adding detail Ptolemy had not recorded, and this offhand note is widely treated by historians of astronomy as the earliest surviving written record of a galaxy beyond our own, centuries before Simon Marius's telescopic observation of the same object in 1612 that is more often cited as the first modern sighting.
Al-Sufi had no way to know what he was describing. Naked-eye visibility of the Andromeda Galaxy under a dark sky is a real, if faint, phenomenon, and a careful tenth-century observer cataloguing every fixed point of light he could see was bound to notice a smudge that would not resolve into a point no matter how carefully he looked.
The gap between that written note and Hubble's proof of what it actually was runs to nearly a thousand years, a reminder that being recorded and being understood are two different achievements.
