A Prayer Assembled from Sikh History Itself

Unlike most major Sikh prayers, the Ardas is not drawn directly from the Guru Granth Sahib as scripture but was composed and developed over time by the Sikh community itself, opening with an invocation of the one primal energy before moving through a recollection of the ten human Gurus in sequence, the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru, and then the sacrifices, courage and achievements of the wider Sikh community across its history, including specific historical episodes of persecution and martyrdom that the prayer names or references. This structure, effectively narrating Sikh communal history as part of the act of prayer itself, gives the Ardas a distinctive function compared to more purely devotional or theological prayers, positioning collective memory as itself a form of petition, since recalling past sacrifice and faithfulness is presented as grounds for present request rather than as separate historical commentary.

Because its later sections historically allowed some latitude for naming contemporary community concerns and needs before the fixed closing verses, the Ardas has functioned across Sikh history as a living text capable of registering the community's present circumstances even while its core historical recollection and opening invocation remain relatively stable. Scholars of Sikh liturgy note that this combination of fixed core and adaptable content is relatively unusual compared to more textually static prayers such as the Mool Mantar or the Japji Sahib.
