What Publication Never Transferred

Arrernte religious law closes its ceremonial knowledge, its object designs and much of its song to outsiders and to the uninitiated, and this article respects that closure rather than working around it. What can be told honestly is its public history. Arrernte country lies in and around Mparntwe, known today as Alice Springs, in Central Australia, and Arrernte religious life is built on the Dreaming, altyerre, the ancestral era in which travelling beings shaped the land and left their law embedded in particular sites, songs and totems. In the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, researchers including Baldwin Spencer, Frank Gillen and later Theodor Strehlow spent years among the Arrernte and published extensive written accounts of ceremony that had never before appeared in print for a general readership.

That publication is part of the historical record, but it did not transfer the authority to hold or reveal that material away from the Arrernte people whose law it belongs to. The distinction matters more than it might seem: a book leaving a library shelf is not the same event as a custodian's permission, and the Arrernte have continued to say so themselves. Arrernte religion remains a living tradition today, central to identity in and around Alice Springs, carried forward by Arrernte people rather than preserved only in the accounts written about them last century.
