How the Ash Bath Works
An ash bath works on the same buffering principle as a sand bath, but with wood ash standing in for sand as the medium that separates flame from vessel. A shallow tray of ashes, drawn either from a separate fire or from the coals of the fire under it, cushions the vessel so it is never in direct contact with flame or with active coals, and the vessel is nested into the ashes to a controlled depth just as it would be nested into sand. Ashes hold and release heat more gradually and at a lower overall level than sand does, which made an ash bath the choice when an operator wanted the flame-free protection of a buffered heat but did not need, or actively wanted to avoid, the higher temperature a sand bath could deliver.
Because ashes retain warmth for a long stretch after the fire that produced them has burned down, an ash bath could also be run on the dying embers of a fire rather than requiring one actively stoked and burning, letting a slow operation continue gently through a period when the operator was not tending the fire at all. That made it especially suited to overnight or unattended digestion, where the goal was a long, low, steadily fading warmth rather than a constant fixed temperature.
