The Other Great Gathic Formula and Its Reading Problem
Ashem vohu is composed in Gathic Avestan, the archaic dialect of the five Gathas attributed to Zarathushtra, and this dialect is sufficiently different from the more standardized Younger Avestan of the rest of the Zoroastrian scriptural corpus that translating even a short formula like this one remains genuinely contested among specialists. Modern scholars working directly from the Avestan, including Stanley Insler, Helmut Humbach and Prods Oktor Skjaervo among others, have produced translations of the Gathic material that diverge from each other at the level of individual words far more than is typical for translations of comparably short ancient religious formulas in better attested languages, because Gathic Avestan survives in a small corpus with limited comparative material to check uncertain forms against.
Despite that scholarly disagreement over precise wording, the formula's devotional use has remained stable: it is recited constantly through the day by observant Zoroastrians, before and after other prayers, on waking, on ritual washing and at the tying of the sacred cord, a frequency of use that does not depend on resolving the underlying philological questions, since the formula functions in lived practice as fixed liturgical Avestan rather than as a sentence practitioners parse word by word. The dating problem compounds the translation problem: since Zarathushtra's own lifetime is placed anywhere across a range spanning more than a millennium depending on which linguistic and historical arguments a scholar favors, even establishing the rough era in which this specific Gathic Avestan was composed remains open in a way most other ancient formulas in this atlas are not.
