The Same State, Studied Under a Different Name

When researchers have attempted to test astral projection's central practical claim, that a practitioner can accurately perceive a real, distant, otherwise unknown location or object while "projected," results have not exceeded chance under controlled conditions: no test has produced information a practitioner could not plausibly have obtained through ordinary means, prior knowledge, or educated guessing. This is the same evidentiary gap documented for the closely related out-of-body experience, and the two claims are, in the scientific literature, usually treated as the same underlying phenomenon studied under two different vocabularies, occult practice using astral projection and its cosmology of subtle bodies, clinical and parapsychological research using the neutral term coined by Tyrrell and popularised by Green.

The neuroscience that has successfully triggered OBE-like sensations through direct brain stimulation and perceptual illusion, disrupting the brain's ordinary sense of where the self is located within the body, applies to astral projection's subjective core as much as to any other reported instance of the sensation, and offers a tested, internally generated explanation for the experience that does not require a genuinely separable astral body travelling to a real location.
