Ayat an-Nur opens with a direct declaration, "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth," and then spends the rest of the verse unfolding what that declaration might mean through a nested visual image rather than through further direct statement. The light is likened to a niche in a wall holding a lamp; the lamp sits inside a glass so clear it seems almost to shine on its own, "as if it were a pearly star"; the glass is lit by oil from a blessed olive tree said to be "neither of the East nor of the West," oil so luminous it would nearly give light even untouched by fire. The verse closes by noting that this is God guiding whom He wills to His light, offered as an illustration for people rather than as literal description of a physical lamp.
That structure, image layered inside image, each one qualifying and intensifying the last, is unusual within the Quran's more typically direct declarative style, and it is exactly what has made the verse so productive for commentary. Readers have long treated its progression, niche, lamp, glass, oil, as inviting a graded reading: something nearer the light and something further, a physical container and an immaterial radiance the container only partly holds, rather than a flat, single-level metaphor. Compared with Ayat al-Kursi's sustained statement of divine attributes, Ayat an-Nur works through accumulated imagery, which is part of why it drew such different interpretive attention, less legal and creedal, more contemplative and mystical.
