Religion and History in the Bahamas

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The Bahamas, a chain of hundreds of islands and cays stretching from just off Florida down toward Cuba, is a strongly Protestant Christian country, Baptist churches the single largest tradition and Anglican, Pentecostal, Church of God and Roman Catholic communities filling out a religious landscape shaped by centuries of British colonial rule and the American Loyalist and enslaved populations who settled the islands after the American Revolution.

Small Rastafarian, Muslim, Baha'i and Jewish communities exist mainly around Nassau, the capital, and religious observance runs deep into Bahamian public life, church attendance remaining markedly higher than in wealthier North American and European societies with comparable incomes. Tourism, the country's dominant industry, has brought sustained exposure to visitors from more secular societies without noticeably weakening the churches' central place in Bahamian community life, and religious broadcasting, gospel radio and televised Sunday services remain a fixture of everyday Bahamian media in a way that has faded in many neighboring islands.
