Aquarius 8: The Square Chart

Charubel's image for this degree is method applied to the sky: an astrological chart in square form. The square form matters as much as the chart itself, since a horoscope can be drawn as a circle, the wheel most readers now expect, or as the older square, quartered and quartered again into the twelve houses by straight lines rather than curved divisions. Choosing the square over the circle is choosing angularity over continuity, corners over a smooth turning, and a square chart reads less like a single flowing cycle and more like a set of discrete, adjoining rooms, each with its own walls.

Read at the eighth degree of Aquarius, a sign devoted to systems that classify and to instruments that make the invisible legible, the image praises the whole enterprise of charting, the belief that a moment as intangible as a birth can be rendered into fixed geometry and then genuinely read, degree by degree, the way this very entry is being read now. It also, by choosing the antique square rather than the familiar wheel, reminds the reader that the instrument itself has a history and has changed shape more than once without the sky underneath it changing at all. The shadow is mistaking the chart for the life, forgetting that the squared lines are a diagram, not the person. On a natal Mercury, Uranus or Saturn this degree tends to mark natural systematisers, chart makers of every kind, and its counsel is a cartographer's: trust the instrument enough to use it seriously, and remember always that the map is drawn square only because paper has corners, not because the sky does.
