No Establishment and a Nunciature Shared With El Salvador in Belize

The constitution guarantees freedom of religion and conscience and establishes no state church. Full diplomatic relations with the Holy See were established on 9 March 1983, during Pope John Paul II's visit to the country, and the Apostolic Nunciature to Belize is combined with the nunciature to El Salvador under one resident nuncio rather than standing on its own, a shared arrangement more typical of small states with limited diplomatic infrastructure than of a country whose Catholic share still runs to roughly forty per cent of the population.

More than four decades of formal relations, layered onto a much older pastoral presence, have produced no bilateral treaty defining the Catholic Church's legal status, so Belize's relationship with Rome remains diplomatic rather than concordat-based, distinguishing it from the handful of this atlas's country entries that hold a formal agreement with the Holy See.
