Separate from its underworld associations, Below also carries a more immediate, grounded meaning in traditions that use it: the earth underfoot, ancestral burial, and the chthonic deities and spirits whose domain is the soil and what lies beneath it rather than a distant afterlife realm. Practices described as "grounding" in various contemporary and traditional systems orient attention downward for this reason, treating Below as a source of stability and rootedness rather than only as the direction of death.
That double character, at once the underworld of the dead and the solid ground that supports the living, is not a contradiction most traditions holding it feel obliged to resolve; earth and the realm of ancestors are frequently understood as continuous with one another rather than as two separate places sharing a direction by coincidence.
Ritual practice often makes the direction explicit in the gesture itself. Greek religion distinguished offerings raised on a built altar for the Olympian gods from offerings poured or set down into the earth for chthonic powers and for the dead, so that the direction of the gift identified who was being addressed before a word was spoken. Libation poured onto the ground for the ancestors is documented across a wide range of African traditions and their diaspora descendants on the same logic, the ground being the address rather than merely the surface the liquid lands on.
Chinese cosmology pairs di, earth, with tian, heaven, as one of the fundamental couplings from which the rest of the scheme is built, and places the realm of the dead at the Yellow Springs beneath the ground, a name taken from the water a digger reaches on going far enough down.
