From Ashari Formula to Traditionist Watchword

Bila kayfa did not stay confined to the Ashari school that gave it its classic phrasing. The formula has an older root in Hanbali traditionism, predating Ashari kalam and continuing independently of it, and later Salafi and Wahhabi theology adopted the same words while explicitly rejecting the speculative method, kalam, that Ashari scholars used to defend it. For Salafi and Wahhabi writers the appeal of bila kayfa is precisely that it requires no philosophical apparatus: scripture is affirmed as it stands, the manner of the attribute is left with God, and reasoning about how a divine hand or face could exist is treated as itself a kind of overreach rather than a legitimate theological project. The result is that the same three words now serve two theological traditions that otherwise diverge sharply on method, the Ashari school which reaches the formula through structured rational argument, and the Salafi and Wahhabi movements which reach the identical formula by refusing rational argument on this question altogether. Both readings agree the words of scripture are affirmed as revealed; they disagree about how a Muslim is permitted to think about them further. Ibn Taymiyyah, the fourteenth century Hanbali jurist both traditions claim as an authority, is commonly read as the bridge figure whose own writing on the divine attributes shaped how later Salafi and Wahhabi scholars would restate bila kayfa in their own terms.
