A Modern Method for an Old Word

Unlike almost everything else in this atlas, buddho carries no scriptural citation because none exists: it is a twentieth century meditation method rather than an inherited canonical formula, systematized within the Thai forest tradition associated with Ajahn Mun Bhuridatta in the early decades of the twentieth century and taught by him to the students who would carry the lineage forward, including Ajahn Chah, whose own monasteries later trained a significant number of Western monastics. Its transmission is accordingly recent and traceable through a named teaching lineage in a way most of the formulas in this atlas, whose origins recede into anonymous antiquity, are not, and it reached practitioners outside Thailand largely through those Western students returning to found forest tradition monasteries in Europe, North America and Australia in the later twentieth century.

There is little translation dispute because the word itself is simply Buddha in a grammatical form meaning awakened, divided for breathing purposes into two syllables, bud taken in on the inhale and dho released on the exhale, rather than compressed or altered from a longer formula the way many mantras in this atlas are. What is discussed within the tradition is method rather than meaning: how tightly the syllables should be tied to the physical breath, how a meditator should handle the transition when concentration deepens and formal noting of the two syllables becomes an obstacle rather than a support, and whether buddho functions best as a preliminary technique to be set aside once stillness is established or as something that can be sustained indefinitely, a live pedagogical question among forest tradition teachers rather than a settled doctrine.
