Inculturation or Syncretism, and Who Got to Decide

The reaction inside the hall split roughly along a line the ecumenical movement had been drawing and redrawing for decades: how far can Christian worship take on the forms of a local, non-Christian religious culture before it stops being recognizably Christian at all. Supporters read Chung Hyun Kyung's address as inculturation, the legitimate practice of expressing Christian faith through the symbolic language of a particular culture, in this case Korean shamanic ritual, rather than the seminary Latin or European hymnody the ecumenical movement had inherited from its Western founders. Critics read the same performance as syncretism, a blending that let ancestral and nature spirits stand in the same sentence as the Holy Spirit without distinguishing them, which for many delegates crossed a line inculturation was supposed to respect rather than erase.

Neither side was arguing from ignorance of the other's position; both had watched the identical eighteen minutes. What the dispute exposed was that the World Council of Churches, drawing member churches from Pentecostal Africa to state-recognized Orthodoxy in Eastern Europe, had never actually settled where that line sat, and Canberra forced the question into the open rather than resolving it. The inter-Orthodox consultation convened afterward was one institutional answer: a formal channel for a constituency that felt the assembly had moved past what its own theology could accommodate, without any side conceding the argument.
