Older Than It Claims, Younger Than It Feels

The circle Wicca casts descends visibly from the protective circle of earlier ceremonial magic, most notably the sort described in grimoires such as the Key of Solomon, where a magician draws a circle to hold spirits at bay while working, and from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's late nineteenth century temple ritual, which Gerald Gardner and the first Wiccans drew on directly when compiling the practice into what became modern Wicca in the middle of the twentieth century. What changed in that borrowing was the stated purpose: a grimoire circle exists mainly to protect the operator from what is called up, while the Wiccan circle is framed instead as a boundary marking sacred space and containing the energy the group itself raises.

Gardner and his contemporaries described their practice as a survival of pre-Christian witchcraft transmitted secretly across the centuries, a claim of unbroken continuity that professional historians, most thoroughly the historian Ronald Hutton, have examined against the documentary record and found unsupported. What the sources do support is a mid-twentieth century synthesis drawing openly, if not always openly acknowledged at the time, on ceremonial magic, folklore studies, and Gardner's own invention, rather than a rite handed down since antiquity. That the tracing of a circle is genuinely old is not in dispute; that this specific ritual form is genuinely old is.
