Cen is the sixth of the twenty four Futhorc runes carried from the Elder Futhark, its reading as a torch or controlled flame a close continuation of Kenaz, whose own name is generally connected to a root meaning a torch, a sore or an ulcer, readings runologists have linked through the shared image of a burning or inflamed point, the Old English tradition settling on the torch sense specifically and developing it into the hospitable, hall centred image the surviving stanza carries.
R. I. Page's account of the futhorc treats Cen as a moderate case of continuity, closer to the stable readings of Feoh, Ur and Rad than to the more visibly reworked Thorn and Os, since the underlying image of controlled fire survives intact even as the specific stanza built around it developed its own distinctly Anglo-Saxon domestic setting. The sound value c, pronounced as a hard k in most positions in Old English, that Cen carries into the futhorc's alphabetic function reflects the same sound Kenaz represented in the Elder Futhark, one of several runes across the row whose phonetic value survived the split between the two traditions essentially unchanged. Page notes that Kenaz's own letterform, a simple angled stroke, is sometimes read as a stylised flame or torch shape, a visual reinforcement of the meaning consistent with, though not conclusive proof of, the reading both traditions settled on.
