The Seventh Ray: Ceremonial Order and Magic

The Seventh Ray, of Ceremonial Order and Magic, is in the Theosophical system of Alice Bailey the ray of the organiser, the priest and the ceremonial magician, the energy that brings spirit into ordered manifestation through ritual, structure and the marriage of the higher and lower worlds. It is associated with the planet Uranus and with the colour violet, and its quality is the power to organise, to ritualise and to root the ideal in disciplined form, its shadow an empty formalism or a magic pursued for its own sake.

Bailey held the Seventh Ray to be the incoming ray of the present transition, connected to the dawning Aquarian age, bringing new forms of organisation and a renewed interest in the ceremonial and the magical. It is the last of the four rays of attribute. Like the whole doctrine it is modern, Blavatsky in 1888, Bailey from 1936, a twentieth-century esoteric construction, and its correspondences are part of that synthesis rather than an ancient tradition.
