The Archangel Who Seeks God

Chamuel belongs to the later Western and Kabbalistic tradition of archangels rather than to the Eastern Orthodox Synaxis of the Bodiless Powers. His name is read as "he who seeks God." He appears in no canonical scripture and in no classical Orthodox list of seven; his identity was assembled in medieval and early modern angelology, and elaborated in the esoteric and, later, New Age traditions, where he is commonly associated with love, tolerance, and the seeking of God through the resolution of conflict and the finding of what is lost, whether a lost object, a lost relationship, or a lost sense of purpose.

Some devotional traditions link him to the angel who strengthened Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, though the identification is a later interpretive one rather than a scriptural datum. He illustrates a broader pattern: the medieval and modern West multiplied named archangels well beyond the scriptural and Orthodox core, assigning to each a sphere of human concern.
