A Name the Ancient Record Never Attaches to an Altar

Unlike his daughter Leto, who received cult worship at major sanctuaries connected to her children Apollo and Artemis, or his brother in law and fellow Titan Cronus, who was still honored annually at Athens through the Kronia centuries after his overthrow, Coeus is not attested as an object of worship anywhere in the surviving Greek religious record: no altar, temple, priesthood or festival addressed to him by name has been identified in either literary sources or archaeological evidence. His place in Greek religion is entirely genealogical and cosmological rather than devotional, a Titan whose significance lies in what he generated, chiefly Leto and, through her, Apollo and Artemis, rather than in anything asked of him directly by worshippers. That absence fits a broader pattern among the Titans who took no active role in the succession myth or the war against Zeus: figures such as Coeus survive in the tradition mainly as names in genealogical lists and as the parents of gods who mattered more to ordinary religious life than they did, a fate several of his siblings among the so called minor Titans share and one that later poets occasionally acknowledged directly by treating such names as little more than placeholders in a family tree leading toward the Olympians.
