Paul Schaefer's Capture and the Chilean Reckoning

Paul Schaefer fled Colonia Dignidad in 1997 as Chilean courts finally moved on child abuse complaints, and for eight years the colony's leader was a fugitive protected by silence. In March 2005 investigators found him in a gated house outside Buenos Aires; extradited within days, he was convicted in 2006 of the sexual abuse of twenty five children of colono and neighbouring Chilean families, with further convictions following for weapons and rights crimes, and he died in prison in Santiago in 2010. His capture broke the colony open. Excavations uncovered an enormous buried arsenal, and judicial investigations confirmed what exiles had alleged for decades, that during the Pinochet years the settlement had served the DINA secret police as a detention and torture site and that disappeared prisoners had been held and killed there, findings documented by Chilean courts and by Amnesty International's long campaign.

The reckoning has been slow and remains incomplete. German diplomacy had ignored citizens' pleas for decades, a failure the German foreign minister publicly acknowledged in 2016 when opening the archives; survivors of both the abused colonos and the families of the disappeared have pressed for reparations and for turning the site, now the renamed Villa Baviera, into a memorial rather than a tourist restaurant, a dispute still unresolved. Films and series, from the 2015 feature Colonia to Netflix documentaries, keep the case before the public as the era's starkest fusion of sect and state terror.
