The Two Spirits and the Sons of Light

Columns three and four carry the theological core, the Two Spirits discourse, and it is unlike anything else in surviving Second Temple Judaism for its systematic quality. God created two spirits, of light and of darkness, of truth and of deceit, and set men to walk in them until the time of his visitation. A Prince of Lights rules the sons of righteousness; an Angel of Darkness rules the sons of deceit and leads even the righteous astray in part.

Two features make it distinctive. First, the dualism is not absolute: both spirits are created, God's sovereignty is not shared, and the dualism is bounded by a decreed end at which deceit will be destroyed and truth purified in the human heart. Second, the allocation is not left to choice. Men walk in one spirit or the other according to their portion, which sits alongside a rule that in practice requires deliberate entry, obedience and penance, and the Rule does not resolve the tension.

The document also lays out an annual covenant renewal ceremony. Priests recite God's acts, Levites recite Israel's sins, entrants confess, and blessings on the men of God's lot are answered by curses on the men of Belial's lot, with the assembly answering Amen to both. The one who enters with an idol in his heart is cursed by name and function.

Notably, the Rule does not mention the Teacher of Righteousness, the founding figure known from the Damascus Document and the biblical commentaries from Qumran. The Rule's authority is vested in the sons of Zadok, the priests, and in the Instructor's office rather than in a named founder, and any reconstruction of the community's history must build that difference in rather than harmonise it away.
