Overview
Copernicium was first created in 1996 at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt by a team led by Sigurd Hofmann, by fusing lead and zinc nuclei, and its name was formally adopted in 2010. It was named after the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Copernicium is an intensely radioactive synthetic metal, known only from a few atoms, and predicted to be unusually volatile for a metal, perhaps behaving almost like a noble gas. Made by fusing lead and zinc nuclei, its most stable isotopes last only seconds, and every atom is identified by the trail of alpha decays it leaves as it falls apart, with its extreme volatility a striking mark of the relativistic effects that reshape the heaviest elements.
Copernicus delayed publishing his heliocentric model for decades, reportedly wary of both scientific ridicule and theological controversy, and his book De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium appeared only in 1543, the year of his own death; the Catholic Church later placed it on its list of prohibited books in 1616, not lifting the restriction until 1758, so the astronomer whose name copernicium bears was himself once at the very centre of a genuine collision between science and religious authority. Galileo's own later condemnation for defending the same heliocentric model is the far better remembered episode, but Copernicus's book was the one formally banned first.
