Corvus's crow sits with the cup and the serpent in one of the sky's clearest shared myths. Within the crow's own compact quadrilateral of stars lies a very different kind of drama, playing out far beyond anything Apollo's punishment imagined: two entire galaxies in the act of colliding.
The Antennae Galaxies, catalogued as NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, are a pair of spiral galaxies roughly 45 million light years away, caught mid-collision as their mutual gravity pulls long, curved tails of stars and gas out into space, the streams that give the pair its antenna-like nickname. Galaxy collisions of this kind unfold over hundreds of millions of years, far too slowly for any single observation to show real motion, but repeated imaging and modelling have let astronomers reconstruct the stages of the encounter and predict how the two galaxies will eventually merge into one.
It is among the nearest and best studied examples of galaxies actually merging rather than merely passing near one another, valuable precisely because it lets astronomers study in reasonably close, resolvable detail a process the Milky Way itself is due to undergo with the Andromeda Galaxy several billion years from now.
The crow, condemned in myth to a cup forever out of reach, sits watching a much larger and much slower collision that will likewise never be witnessed to completion by anyone alive to see it start.
