Stones, Energy, and the Boundary of Evidence

Crystal healing is a modern practice in which gemstones and crystals are used to influence the body's "energy" and to promote healing, balance, and protection. Practitioners hold that each type of stone carries a particular vibration or property, rose quartz for love, amethyst for calm and spiritual insight, black tourmaline for protection, and so on, and place stones on or around the body, often aligned with the chakras of Indian tradition, or carry them, to draw on these qualities. The practice draws on older folk and lapidary traditions that ascribed powers to gems (medieval and ancient lapidaries catalogued the virtues of stones), but in its current form it is largely a creation of the twentieth-century New Age movement, blending these older ideas with the modern vocabulary of "energy" and "vibration."

Presented honestly, it is important to note the boundary of evidence: from a scientific standpoint, there is no established physical mechanism by which crystals affect health, and controlled studies have not found effects beyond those attributable to belief and expectation (the placebo response). This does not diminish its meaning for practitioners, for whom it functions within a wider spiritual framework of intention, mindfulness, and connection to the natural world; it does mean that crystal healing is properly understood as a spiritual and complementary practice rather than a form of medical treatment, and reputable practitioners present it as such rather than as a substitute for medical care.
