The Day Appointed Against a Day Never Claimed

The Day of the Covenant (Yawm-i-Mithaq) is kept on 26 November and honours Abdu'l-Baha, the eldest son of Baha'u'llah, in his appointed role as the Centre of the Covenant, the authorised interpreter of his father's teachings and the head of the faith after him. The Baha'i "Covenant" is the arrangement, set out in Baha'u'llah's own will, by which authority passed clearly to Abdu'l-Baha and later to the institutions of the faith, intended to preserve its unity and guard against schism; the day celebrates that covenant and Abdu'l-Baha's faithfulness to it.

Its date has an unusual origin that Baha'is take as characteristic. Believers had wished to celebrate Abdu'l-Baha's birthday, but he declined to allow it, both out of humility and because he had been born, by the tradition, on the very day the Bab declared his mission (23 May), a day he held belonged to the Bab alone. He instead designated 26 November as a day on which his station as Centre of the Covenant, rather than his birth, might be commemorated. The Day of the Covenant is thus not one of the nine holy days on which work is suspended, and it stands as a deliberate redirection of honour away from the person toward the office and the covenant he served.
