A Birthplace in Myth

Delos was sacred enough that a god was said to be born there, and important enough politically that an entire military alliance kept its treasury on the island for decades.

A birthplace in myth

Greek myth holds that Apollo and Artemis were born on Delos, after their mother Leto, pursued by a jealous Hera, found refuge on the small floating island, a birth narrative that made Delos one of the most significant Panhellenic sanctuaries in the ancient Greek world despite its modest physical size.

Where an alliance kept its money

Delos served as the treasury site of the Delian League, the Athenian-led alliance formed after the Persian Wars, with member states' financial contributions initially stored on the island under religious protection before Pericles controversially moved the treasury to Athens itself, a relocation that critics at the time saw as converting a shared defensive fund into resources for Athenian imperial and building projects.

As this entry's companion article covers

The island's strict purity laws prohibiting births and deaths on its sacred ground, existing in the same period and place as its function as a major ancient slave trading hub, are addressed directly in this entry's companion article rather than repeated here.
