Dhana Yoga

Dhana Yoga, the wealth combination, is likewise a class rather than a single configuration, covering the combinations that the tradition reads for material prosperity. The houses concerned are the second, of accumulated wealth and family resources, and the eleventh, of gains and income, together with the ninth of fortune and the fifth of merit; associations between their lords, and between those lords and the lord of the Ascendant, form the various dhana yogas. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and the later handbooks list many named variants. As with raja yoga, the classical texts are careful to add that the timing of any result depends on the dasha system, the sequence of planetary periods by which Jyotisha times events, so that a wealth combination is held to operate during the periods of the planets that form it and not otherwise.

Among the many named wealth combinations the tradition lists, one recurring and especially prized case is the yogakaraka, a planet that for a given ascendant simultaneously rules one of the trikona houses, first, fifth or ninth, the houses of merit and fortune, and one of the kendras, first, fourth, seventh or tenth, the houses of power and visible standing; because trikona and kendra lordships are individually auspicious, a single planet holding both at once is read as unusually potent, and its involvement in a wealth combination is given extra weight beyond an ordinary house-lord association. Which planet qualifies as yogakaraka depends entirely on the ascendant, Mars for a Cancer or Leo ascendant and Venus for a Capricorn or Aquarius ascendant being frequently cited examples, so the same pairing forms a modest dhana yoga in one chart and an unusually strong one in another purely because of where the ascendant falls.
