Dhanishta is the twenty-third nakshatra, straddling the Capricorn-Aquarius boundary from 293 degrees 20 minutes to 306 degrees 40 minutes of the sidereal zodiac. Its Vimshottari ruler is Mars, its presiding deities are the Vasus, the eight gods of the elements and abundance, and its symbol is a drum or a flute. The name means the wealthiest or most munificent. Jyotisha reads Dhanishta through rhythm, music, wealth, and generous abundance, the drum that sets the beat, the prosperity the Vasus bestow, and classes it as Rakshasa gana. The musical symbol gives it a theme of timing and performance. These attributions are traditional readings laid over the Capricorn-Aquarius border stars, including part of the Dolphin, that Indian astronomy counts in this segment.
Dhanishta's padas fall in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. The eight Vasus of Vedic myth are elemental gods, among them Agni, Prithvi (earth), Vayu, and several others personifying natural phenomena, later famous chiefly through the Mahabharata's account of their collective incarnation as Bhishma and his seven brothers, a narrative link that gives Dhanishta's presiding deities an epic-literature prominence beyond the nakshatra doctrine itself. Some classical Indian texts also use Dhanishta as the starting point for an alternative calendrical reckoning distinct from the standard Ashwini-based nakshatra count, a further trace, alongside Krittika's own claim discussed at the first mansion, of the scheme's anchor point having shifted at least once over the long history of Indian astronomical practice.
