Investigators studying direct voice cases across the twentieth century have documented instances of mediums using ventriloquism techniques that do not require visible lip or jaw movement and can be produced even with a partially restrained mouth, concealed voice-throwing devices, and, in several documented cases, a hidden confederate speaking from elsewhere in the room or an adjoining space while the medium's restrained state drew sitters' attention away from the true source.

No direct voice performance, including those given by well-regarded practitioners like Flint, has been conducted under conditions that combined full physical restraint, full room search, and independent acoustic verification of the voice's point of origin sufficient to rule out all of these ordinary explanations simultaneously, and the claim's evidentiary status rests, like the rest of physical mediumship, on testimony from sittings that were not controlled to that standard.
