The Principle Underneath Astrology, Alchemy, and a Great Deal Else

Correspondence is less a single doctrine confined to Hermeticism than a working assumption threaded through an enormous range of practices this atlas otherwise catalogs separately, astrology's mapping of planet to organ and temperament, alchemy's mapping of planetary metal to bodily process, and Kabbalistic mapping of sefirah to bodily limb all depend on some version of the same as above, so below structure, which is exactly why the principle earns its own entry here rather than remaining implicit inside each individual system that uses it. Hermetic mentalism, the closely related claim that the cosmos is fundamentally mental, gives correspondence a further metaphysical grounding in some later formulations, particularly in the Kybalion's popularization of Hermetic teaching, since if the universe is mind at its foundation, a structural mirroring between mental patterns and cosmic patterns becomes considerably less mysterious than it would be in a purely materialist cosmos, though the two doctrines remain genuinely distinct and correspondence does not strictly require mentalism to be true.

Critics, from early modern mechanists onward, argue that apparent correspondences are supplied by the pattern-seeking human mind rather than discovered in an indifferent physical world, a charge correspondence's defenders answer not by disproving it directly but by pointing to the sheer explanatory and practical productivity the principle has generated across so many independent systems over so long a period, an argument from usefulness rather than from independent proof.
