A Text Assembled Across Several Manuscript Traditions

The Shobogenzo, the collection of essays that carries Dogen's core teaching, does not exist in one single authoritative form. It survives instead in several different manuscript recensions compiled and arranged after his death, most importantly versions containing seventy five chapters, sixty chapters, and twelve chapters respectively, with real differences between them in which essays are included and in what order, reflecting different editorial choices made by different disciples and later compilers within the Soto school working from the material Dogen left behind. Reconstructing a single reliable modern edition has required later editors to compare these divergent recensions and make judgment calls about arrangement and inclusion, meaning any version read today is itself the product of centuries of editorial work rather than a single manuscript in Dogen's own hand transmitted unchanged.

Scholars generally treat the core content as authentically his, since the distinctive philosophical voice and terminology are consistent across the different recensions, but the question of exactly which essays belonged to which stage of his teaching career, and how much later disciples shaped the final selection and ordering of the whole collection, remains a live topic in Dogen studies rather than a settled matter, complicated further by evidence that Dogen himself continued revising some essays across different points in his own life.
