Enochian Don's deeper modern history lies less in the letter itself than in the system built around it. John Dee's own diaries, discussed elsewhere in this atlas, record the letters and the language coming through Edward Kelley's visions between 1582 and 1589, organised into what Dee called the Great Table, a grid of angelic names governing four quarters he termed Watchtowers; Dee's own use of the material centred on invoking these angelic hierarchies rather than on any settled theory of correspondence. It was the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, working three centuries later from the 1890s, that layered a fuller occult system onto Dee's tables, assigning each Watchtower one of the four classical elements and building out correspondences to the tarot and the zodiac that Dee himself never described.
Aleister Crowley, trained in the Golden Dawn system before breaking from it, later used the Enochian Calls extensively in a 1909 series of scrying sessions recorded as The Vision and the Voice, working through what he called the thirty Aethyrs, a use of the material considerably removed from either Dee's original angelic communications or the Golden Dawn's more systematic elemental scheme. Don takes part in all of this only as one letter among twenty-one in a language whose real interpretive weight sits in its Calls rather than its alphabet.
