Printed Four Decades After the Composer Died

By the time the Doxastarion Syntomon finally reached print in 1820, Petros Peloponnesios had been dead for forty two years, yet the collection went on to shape Orthodox chant practice far beyond the walls of the Great Church where he had taught it. Large portions of the monodic chant sung today across Bulgarian, Romanian, Serbian, Macedonian and Greek Orthodox practice trace directly to transcriptions of what Petros taught at the Patriarchate's New Music School, meaning a teaching collection compiled for the specific students in front of him in eighteenth century Constantinople became, without his ever intending or living to see it, one of the primary channels through which the Ecumenical Patriarchate's own Constantinopolitan chant style spread outward to the rest of Orthodox Christianity.

Scholars studying his legacy note one genuine complication in crediting him as fully as tradition does, his role at the Great Church combined composing new chant with notating and transcribing chant that more senior cantors were performing, so distinguishing what Petros originated from what he simply wrote down in a more usable form is not always straightforward from the surviving sources. That uncertainty has not diminished his standing. He remains counted among the most consequential composer-teachers of the New Method school of Byzantine musical notation, the figure whose classroom materials quietly became the common inheritance of several national Orthodox chant traditions at once.
