A Teaching, Not a Technique

Dzogchen presents itself as categorically different from gradual meditative methods that build toward awakening through accumulated practice. Its central claim is that awareness is already, inherently awakened, and that the path consists in recognizing this directly rather than manufacturing it. The pivotal moment in Dzogchen training is traditionally the pointing-out instruction, in which a qualified teacher directly introduces a prepared student to the nature of their own awareness, a transmission tradition describes as happening through the teacher's presence, gesture or word rather than through discursive explanation, and as something the student then stabilizes through subsequent practice under continued guidance.

Nyingma sources are explicit that this introduction is reserved for students who meet specific preliminary requirements and who receive it from a teacher holding a valid lineage, and that premature or improperly transmitted exposure to Dzogchen's core instructions is considered actively counterproductive, liable to produce a merely intellectual or mistaken understanding rather than genuine recognition. In keeping with that structure and with the tradition's own restriction, this entry does not describe the content of the pointing-out instruction or any contemplative technique that follows from it; what can be said publicly is that Dzogchen exists, what it claims to be, and the conditions the tradition itself sets for receiving it, which is direct transmission from a qualified teacher, not study of a text or a summary.
