Lineage, History and Live Scholarly Questions

Nyingma tradition traces Dzogchen to the eighth century, crediting Indian and Central Asian tantric masters, chiefly Padmasambhava and Vimalamitra, with transmitting it to Tibet during the imperial period's first wave of Buddhist teaching there. This lineage claim functions within the tradition as a statement of religious authority and continuity, and it is worth distinguishing from the separate historical question of when the earliest surviving Dzogchen texts can be securely dated, which scholars including Samuel and van Schaik place somewhat later and treat as an open research question, particularly regarding Dzogchen's relationship to other contemplative currents present in Tibet in the same period, including Chinese Chan Buddhist teaching that reached Tibet independently.

The fourteenth century scholar-yogi Longchenpa systematized and greatly expanded the Dzogchen literature and remains its most authoritative commentator within the tradition. Dzogchen continued to be transmitted through Nyingma and, in a related form, Bon lineages in Tibet until the twentieth century, when the Chinese takeover of Tibet from 1950 and the exile of many senior teachers after 1959 scattered Dzogchen lineage holders internationally, and a number of them, including figures who taught extensively in Europe and North America from the 1960s onward, began transmitting Dzogchen to Western students, always within the tradition's own framework of preliminary requirement and direct, teacher-to-student introduction rather than as an openly published technique.
