Divination: The Historical Record and the Modern Revival

Ancient runic use centered on writing and charms rather than a set oracle. In the modern revival Ehwaz is commonly read for trust, partnership, cooperation, movement and steady progress made together. These keyword meanings derive from the twentieth-century reconstructionist and esoteric tradition rather than from the ancient record, and are offered here as a symbolic system, without any claim of foretelling.

Because Ehwaz survives in only one of the three rune poems, its reconstructed meaning rests on a single attestation, though that stanza's association of the horse with partnership, mutual trust between rider and mount, and social standing among warriors is clear on its own terms. Modern divinatory practice reads Ehwaz for trust and partnership, a keyword sense that follows the Old English stanza's emphasis on the working bond between horse and rider rather than treating the horse as a symbol of speed or freedom alone.

The Armanen-descended rune-magic tradition transmitted into English chiefly through Thorsson's work also treats Ehwaz as usable actively rather than only read passively: chanted aloud as galdr, or carved into wood, metal or a bind-rune combining several staves, for an intended practical effect. No source earlier than the twentieth century attests any such active magical use of this specific rune, and the practice should be understood as a modern reconstruction built on the reconstructed name and the rune poems rather than as a recovered ancient technique.
