The Evangelical Church in Germany remains active today as a federation of twenty regional Protestant churches, the Landeskirchen, predominantly Lutheran, Reformed and United in confession, governed by the Council of the EKD, the Rat der EKD. That number, twenty, is itself smaller than the twenty eight churches that joined the federation at its 1945 founding in Treysa, reflecting mergers among regional churches over the decades since rather than any churches leaving the federation outright.
Like the Catholic Church in Germany, the EKD draws on the state administered church tax established under the Weimar Constitution and carried into the postwar Basic Law, under which the state remits a share of registered members' income tax to their regional church rather than relying on voluntary collections alone. That shared funding mechanism gives Germany's two largest Christian bodies, one Catholic and one a Protestant federation, an institutional similarity in how they are financed that sets German church funding apart from most other national church systems in Europe.
Each of the twenty Landeskirchen retains its own regional identity, liturgy and governance within the wider EKD federation, so the Council of the EKD coordinates a genuinely federal structure rather than administering a single centralized national church the way some other Protestant bodies elsewhere in Europe do. That federal design traces directly back to the 1945 Treysa founding, when the point of the new body was to bring already distinct regional churches together into common cause rather than to dissolve them into one uniform institution.
