Registration and the Place of Royal Ritual Under Eswatini Law

Eswatini's constitution guarantees freedom of worship and establishes no official state church, yet royal ritual sits inside the country's constitutional order rather than outside it: the Incwala ceremony remains closely woven into national and constitutional life under the king's own traditional authority, a religious practice with a formal civic standing few purely private faiths hold anywhere.

Registration works differently depending on a group's kind. A Christian group registers by applying through one of three recognized umbrella bodies, the League of Churches, the Swaziland Conference of Churches or the Council of Swaziland Churches, which forwards its constitution, membership and location to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade along with its own recommendation. An Indigenous or non-Christian group instead needs only a recognized leader, an actual congregation and a place of worship, a lighter path than the Christian umbrella process requires. Registered groups of either kind are exempt from taxation, though gifts to them are not tax deductible, and the government does not publish how many groups it has registered under either track.
