From Theosophy to the Popular Aura

The etheric double and its associated etheric energy proved to be one of Theosophy's most durable exports into twentieth century alternative spirituality and energy-healing practice, contributing directly to popular conceptions of the human aura as a layered, colored energy field, an idea now encountered widely detached from its specific Theosophical origin and technical vocabulary, a lineage historians of esotericism such as Olav Hammer, in Claiming Knowledge: Strategies of Epistemology from Theosophy to the New Age, and Joscelyn Godwin, in The Theosophical Enlightenment, have traced in detail from Blavatsky and Leadbeater through to later twentieth century New Age culture. The specific terminology has shifted considerably in transmission: many later practitioners use "etheric" loosely for any subtle energy near the physical body without retaining Leadbeater's precise distinction from the astral layer, and some popular writing conflates etheric energy outright with unrelated concepts such as qi or prana rather than treating it as Theosophy's own particular doctrinal construction.

Leadbeater's descriptions were based on his own claimed clairvoyant perception rather than on any instrument or reproducible method, and the etheric double as such has not been independently confirmed by any scientific test; it is presented here as Theosophical doctrine describes it, within the tradition's own terms.
