The challenge numbers invert the ordinary arithmetic of the chart. Where the core numbers, Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge, are built by addition, the challenges are built by subtraction, the absolute difference between totals, an inversion introduced deliberately to model obstacle and deficiency rather than endowment. A challenge of zero, where the two totals are equal, is read as the subtlest and hardest of all, an obstacle with no external handle. The whole challenge apparatus belongs to the twentieth-century American system and, like the rest of it, depends on the Latin spelling of the name.
Underwood Dudley's critical survey of the system, Numerology: Or What Pythagoras Wrought, is the standard sceptical account of what challenge-number readings of this kind are sold for; the scholarly verdict on the wider system's claimed descent from Pythagoras, that it has been largely abandoned as a comparative category, applies with equal force to the subtraction method here as to the addition method behind the core numbers it inverts. The Expression Challenge inherits the same practical problem as the core Expression number it is drawn from: a legal name change through marriage, adoption or personal choice would, by the system's own logic, alter the figure outright, a consequence the founding authors, writing when a birth name was assumed to be lifelong, never fully addressed.
