The Expression Challenge is a challenge number drawn from the full-name, or Expression, totals: it is the absolute difference between the components of the Expression, reduced to a single digit. Where the Expression itself names the talents and the goal a person is equipped to pursue, its challenge names the friction within that equipment, the obstacle, in the numerological reading, that stands between the ability and its full exercise, the inner tension a person must work through to express what they are able to. It is read not as a fixed trait but as a recurring difficulty to be mastered.
The idea of reading a difference, rather than a sum, within the Expression total does not appear in Cheiro's 1926 Book of Numbers or in Balliett's original 1908 chart; the challenge-number apparatus this article belongs to is generally dated later, to the mid-century elaborations associated with Florence Campbell's 1931 book and, more fully, Juno Jordan's 1965 systematisation, which is usually credited with formalising subtraction as the standard method for every challenge figure in the modern chart. Not every modern numerologist derives a challenge from the full name at all: Dan Millman's widely read 1993 book The Life You Were Born to Live works from the single Life Path number computed from the birth date, without any Expression figure or the challenge subtracted from it, a reminder that this apparatus belongs to a particular later elaboration of the system rather than to modern numerology as such.
